Haunted Attraction Magazine and its contributors have traveled across the country visiting haunted attractions and have interviewed haunted house owners about their favorite haunts. We think it’s too difficult to say that one haunt is better than another—after all, each haunt has its own style, pace, and thematic approach. So instead of declaring the haunts we like as the “best,” we’re featuring 25 Haunts that we think provide incredible haunting entertainment, unique events, and fantastic fun. We all have different opinions about what we like in a haunt: some like mood, others like gore; some prefer state-of-the-art animatronics, while others love actors. But we all know that the best measure of success lies in whether or not your customers scream. So, after much research and debate, we now present the 25 Must See Haunts for 2009.

   1. Shocktoberfest, Reading, PA
   2. Terror Behind the Walls, Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA
   3. The 13th Gate, Baton Rouge, LA
   4. Erebus, Pontiac, MI
   5. Wisconsin Feargrounds, Waukesha, WI
   6. Dead Acres, Pataskala, OH
   7. Fear Itself, Mishawaka, IN
   8. The ScareHouse, Pittsburgh, PA
   9. Hobb’s Grove, Sanger, CA
  10. Nightmare New England and SpookyWorld, Litchfield, NH
  11. Thrillvania, Terrell, TX
  12. The House of Shock Horror Show, Jefferson, LA
  13. The Dent SchoolHouse, Cincinnati, OH
  14. Terror Town, Toledo, OH
  15. The Fear Haunted House at Navy Pier, Chicago, IL
  16. 7 Floors of Hell, Cleveland, OH
  17. Woods of Terror on Church Street, Greensboro, NC
  18. Ghostly Manor, Sandusky, OH
  19. The Haunted Hotel, Louisville, KY
  20. CHAOS, Kennedale, TX
  21. Reindeer Manor, Red Oak, TX

Almost a "Who's Who" of Haunted Houses.  Now they just need to give away an all-expenses-paid tour of these haunts to me, and I can die a happy man!

I have been saying, on a few threads, that I plan to visit Hacker House this season for the 1st time...this most recent post puts the nail in the coffin.  I'm going.  I'm going if it takes me until 10.31.09 to get there!!!

One you neglected to mention that deserves to be is X-treme Fear in Greensboro NC. This is one of the best I have been to and has become a favorite with my group.

But why do I always feel like I'm in the twilight zone, And I always feel like Somebody's watching me and I have no privacy, Whooooa-oh-oh, I always feel like Somebody's watching me, Tell me, is it just a dream......(Rockwell)

I agree with you on this, too bad they did not mention x-treme fear. I had a VERY good time there last year. We got to meet Linda and hang out with all of the cast and crew!

Xtreme Fear has always been a fun haunt, and Linda is just plain crazy (in a good way)!  There are a lot of good haunts on this list, and a lot that I'm sure people feel were left off.  We're back on the whole "subjectivity" of opinions on haunts, though.  There may be certain haunts on the list that a lot of people don't agree with, but obviously somebody thinks they're good.  I think it's a pretty good list, but I'm sure there are a lot of deserving haunts that didn't make it.

The Dent Schoolhouse at #13 is hands down the BEST themed haunt in the country in my opinion.  I am VERY surprised that NetherWorld  in Atlanta is not mentioned
