Did anyone else visit the Scary Dairy in Harrisburg this year?  I was NOT impressed!  I was wondering what others thought of it...

I went and it sucked!! They need some serious help if they want to make it through next year...if anyone will even go next year! Our guide was horrible!! She kept talking and screaming the entire time and had no clue what she was doing. The few volunteers they did have didn't have a clue what they were doing either. It was a loooong boring ride!

We were on the same hayride, Buttons!  Smiley  But you're right - it sucked!

Ok guys. We are happy that you visited one of the smaller haunts, but we strive on constructive criticism.  Just saying something "sucked" doesn' really help that haunt owner and staff (volunteers) improve for next year. So, more specific details, please.

Ok - to start off with, it was very unorganized.  After buying the tickets, you just walked over to stand in an area, and when the tractor pulled up (it was a hayride), it was a free-for-all to get on the wagon.   About 45 minutes after we got there, and three tractor loads later (and it wasn't crowded), someone did form a line after MANY complaints from the patrons.  Our "guide" looked high school aged, and spent more time screaming (I mean shrill, get on your nerves screaming - and not that she was scared, she was just doing it to get attention), pointing out her boyfriend to the whole wagon load (who was one of the "spooks") and actually telling us what was going to happen.  Someone closer to her on the wagon actually told her, and they weren't joking, that they would pay her $20 if she didn't scream again.  There was a lot of grumbling, just on our load.  As for the volunteers, the actual ride was about a mile long and there might have been 20-25 people TOTAL scaring.  Everything was spaced out.  Now, don't get me wrong, some spacing out is good, keeps the anticipation up, but with this, there was no anticipation, just boredom.  There were several areas that would have been good for a scene that there was absolutely nothing.  The volunteers that were there didn't act like they wanted to be there.  Some didn't even jump out until after the wagon had passed them!  They were laughing and not "getting into" the scenes/scares.  They couldn't have been tired - our wagon went through within an hour of them opening that night.  It seemed very thrown together.  They seemed like a bunch of high school kids just goofing off.  The tractor dropped us off right where the line to get on was.  I had to bite my tongue to keep from telling people to turn around, it wasn't worth it.  People actually asked me if it was scary, and I didn't want to lie and say it was, so I just kept walking.

I'm sorry for such a bad review, but this was advertised as a HAUNT, not just a hayride.  I bascially paid $10 for a hayride.  I've been to a lot of haunts, and I do get scared, but on this one, I didn't even flinch.  The hayride itself was pretty good, if you take out the fact that we were there to get scared.  I guess it would be good for little kids because it wasn't scary.

I was on the same load with SRC7795 and what she said probably happened on every load. We had angry patrons fussing about the lack of a line to get on the hayride. It was literally a free for all to jump on the next wagon until someone finally got a line going and straightened things out.
The actors that they did have, well, most seemed like they either didn't want to be there or were there to goof off with their friends. Our guide was shrill and informed us on every "scare" that was coming up. Also, she made sure to show off her boyfriend who was one of the "actors" there. Very nice. Oh, and she asked the actors as we went by if they needed water. Not really cool or scary. The "spooks" waited almost until our wagon had gone pass to jump out and try to scare you. And really, there were not enough volunteers there to spook or scare you anyhow. The spacing was horrible and when the chainsaws finally came out...well...it was a waste of good chainsaw action.
It was a long and boring ride. One of the guys with our group actually about fell asleep until our lovely guide decided to be annoying and scream for no good reason. The other patrons on our wagon were complaining on how they had spent $10 on nothing but a boring hayride and how our guide was horrible and they were also pointing out the "spooks" before we even got to them.
This could be a very good haunt and we need a good haunted hayride in Cabarrus County! I'm tired of riding all over NC to other haunts when we could have a great one right here! I know I would be glad to help out if I could.  Maybe just throw some ideas around for whoever is running it.  I would love for it to hang around and get better and be one of the best here in the county. It really has potential!
Me and SRC7795 have been to way to many haunts! LOL!

Thanks for the comments! Scary Dairy was not expecting the turn out we had this year. The second night we were able to construct a multiple wrap around line (kind of like the ones you wait in at Carowinds) which really helped the unorganized chaos that happened the first night. As far as the highschoolers, most did not return the 2nd night and we were able to have a better trail with more mature older “spooks”. The girl that was riding the hayride (pointing and screaming) was actually asked to leave because we were unaware she was doing that. Once we found out what she was doing and how annoying it was we sent her home. This is the 2nd year we have done this and we have learned a lot, ie: don’t have high schoolers work the trail that just want to hangout and make a wrap around line incase tons of people show up so it doesn’t get unorganized. On behalf of Scary Dairy we are sorry for anyone who endured the un-organization of the lines and the annoyance of the girl who rode the hayride Friday night. We guarantee that next year we will obtain people who will be dedicated to putting on a great performance and be more organized. We hope each of you will come back next year to see the changes. Please feel free to email us with suggestion scarydairy@hotmail.com. Also, I personally will write down everyone’s username who comments on this forum and allow them to get in free +1 next year. We hope everyone will understand that the first 2 years have been learning experiences for us. Again, thanks for your comments.

Thank you so much for your response!  Again, I'm sorry for the harshness of my comments, and I know that this was only your 2nd year, and it is a learning experience in the beginning.  I am, by no means, an expert on haunts, but I've been to enough to know what scares me and what works.  I was actually a guide on a friend's trail this year.  I don't mind giving comments/suggestions if you would like them.  Thank you so much for the free +1 offer - I will take you up on that next year!

I love it when a plan comes together, or a haunter and hauntee, however you want to look at it. Smiley

Just to know that your opinions matter is a great thing!  Thank you haunt owners for putting together your shows for us, and for being open to criticism.

Scary Dairy will also have a pumpkin patch next year! We had many requests for hayrides for younger kids as well as those for the trail to be more haunted! Next year there will be certain nights that the trail will be haunted and certain nights it will not be. We are working on building a website so all this information will be available closer to Halloween 2010.

We would LOVE if each of you could email suggestions. We know where things went wrong this year, but would love to have more ideas for making it more "haunted". As many of you die hards know walking through a trail in the woods or a haunted house is MUCH more creepy and scary than a hayride, so any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as to how we can add more of a scare factor. We ARE getting better each year due to more workers, more funds, etc. We appreciate all the comments and support as we do hope to be not only the ONLY haunted hayride in Cabarrus County, but the BEST!

If anyone is interested or know of anyone that is interested in working at the Scary Dairy next year please have them email us. ScaryDairy@hotmail.com.

As a volunteer on both nights, I can say that the "line" issue was taken care of on Saturday, and that our staff worked much better on Saturday despite having fewer people.  The turnout wasn't too bad, especially on Saturday after it had rained most of the day, but the layer of fog that covered the field that evening really helped make things creepy, so that was awesome.  I hope you guys will come out next year to continue the support, and see the changes of an early haunt.

The younger volunteers, I will agree, were annoying and didn't really do their part.  While I'm not really the head of the hayride or worked as closely as many others, I will do my part to ensure more older, enthusiastic volunteers will come and do their part correctly.  I also know of several parts that have open areas and need to be worked on next year, and I'm already coming up with ideas to help, too.

Also, the "boyfriend" that crept up out of the woods in the mask?  That's me, and I've never met her before earlier that day, and I really have NO idea why she said that, as it made it harder for me to try to scare anyone.  I apologize for her behavior, for lack of a better word.   Undecided

Great posts! To HarrisFarms -  just FYI, I don't know how long you've been a Frightseeker here on NCHaunts.com, but this website and the message boards are a GREAT way to get suggestions, comments, and pretty much any information you want about Halloween and haunting.  This is a terrific group of people who LOVE anything to do with haunts and they will help you whatever way they can!  Smiley

Harrisfarms, please feel free to contact me and I will offer my services and see if we can improve the Scary Dairy for 2010.

And for the record, my wife's family owned a dairy for nearly 100 years...
