The new Nightmare  on Elm Street movie is almost upon us!  I have seen the trailer & it looks somewhat like the original. Just wanted to know how everyone else felt about ALL "the original slasher movies "being redone?

The Old school in me says;Leave the classic alone!!!! But, I rather enjoy seeing what someone else can bring to the table....and it's a good way for the younger generations to get a taste of the classic's. ...most everyone who doesn't have or hasn't seen the original(anything) always rents/buys it to watch before seeing a re-make.

I too LOVE the originals & the whole 80's vibe I get from them, however I love the way the new movies seem to be  more " raw & darker" than the originals. I haven't really thought about the originals making a come back with younger viewers due to the new movies, good point. Cool

It depends on what direction they take.  While it's not a complete remake, it is a "reboot".  Some franchises definitely benefit from this.  One that come to mind is Batman.  Let's face it, "The Dark Knight" was incredible.  I'll go see it.  Jackie Earle Haley is fairly bad-ass!

If anyone is interested, here a couple of interesting articles on reboots, remakes and sequels that are in the works...

What the world needs are more Fred Vogels and Adam Greens. Yeah Fred's movies aren't the greatest (look up Toe Tag Pictures if you dont know who he is) but he's out there doing his own thing and you have to respect that. As for Adam Green Hatchet was amazing and Spiral and Frozen weren't bad either.

WELL.... I checked out the lastest Nightmare movie this weekend & have mixed reviews. Overall I think the movie was well done. I like how it's darker, & more methodic, & I think Jackie Earl Haley played the part well, although his character is alot different from how  Robert Englund played the  character. The main problem with the movie for me is.......

..............................Spoiler Alert.............................

The part of the movie when you find out Freddy actually abused/molested the children. I personaly think it would have made alot better story if the audience found out he  didn't, or even it they left it up in the air where the audience was in suspence not knowing for sure what actually happend. They could have made this a huge deal.. I mean this is the cornor stone, this is what created Freddy, but instead of a big payoff you get a box of old polaroid pictures.....what a let down. I my eyes a good horror movie always leaves questions & us wanting more, unanswered questions , possible sequels, & this movie does too. However I just think they tried a little too hard to make the kids victims &  Freddy a monster & by doing so got a little perdictable & lost alot of creative opportunity.
Anyway thats just my opinion & sure some of yours will differ!

I saw it last night and I agree alot with what slaughtermail. Only thing i kind of disagree about is when you find out that -------spoilers-------------
he acually did molest the kids and the reason hes doing all of it is just so they would remember what he did to them that makes him even more of a sadist and a little creepier in my opinion.

Gotta agree with slaughter and krb.  Honey and I went and saw it Saturday afternoon.  Much darker than the original, but I kind of felt the same way about the big lead-up to Freddy's secret, and not much of a pan-out from it.

Jackie Earle Haley was good (to me, he was the only good part of Watchmen), and he played the darker, more sadistic role of Freddy well.  Some of the kids were a bit annoying, but tolerable.  To me they would have been better off using no-name actors instead of some of the more famous actors/actresses they used.  Anyone recognize some of the parents?

Glad i'm not the only one to feel this way, I guess I thought.............

.....SPOILER ALERT.......................

That if Freddy was innocent  & the parents killed him anyway, this would justify him being able to become such a dark evil  monster, the way they wrote  it he was always evil.
Don't get me wrong it works either way, but with all this time passed since the original I guess I hoped they would modify certain aspects of the story & made it "fresher" & "better" ,the way some of the other "remakes" have taken liberties with the original films & improved the story.
Again this is my opinion yours may vary.

I'm gonna have to ask...what remake improved on the original story, in your opinion?

I agree with the idea of Freddy possibly being innocent.  To me it would make him a more...personable (?)...character.  One that people can relate to a little more.  But I guess not being to relate to him is what makes him scary?

Slappy I knew I would take some heat about putting the two words "remake & better" in the same sentence.
First let me make it clear to EVERYONE I'm NOT saying the new movies are BETTER, I'm saying that some of the changes are "BETTER" or make the character deeper & more versatile,  small things like...
in the new Friday 13th
-jason dosen't move like a zombie.... he's built like a tank & moves like a rabbit!
-jason is  good with the bow..........it makes since it's a summer camp activity.
-jason is not  mindless .............. he is a stalker, kinda like a hunter  setting traps  for his prey.

in Halloween by zombie
-you actually see why mike myers becomes  a monster..... from child to killer in one scene
-mike takes the mask left from the dead  boyfriend......I ALWAYS hated the hardware store scene in the original & don't get me started on the whole time frame mix up involving that scene
-the cracked mask & dirty coveralls the, overall costume looks "more authentic" ..... not lilly white mask & fresh pressed coveralls

in Texas Chainsaw Massacre
-leatherface being a dumpster baby....... if this isn't a reason to turn into a maniac I don't know what is
- the overall set in the basement of the house with the table.... I buy it! that is where leatherface would hang!
-the whole " there is no work ,no money, no food, so the  family is  going to do what they have to survive ....
they feel like they are  forced to turn into cannibals

These are SOME of the top changes that come to my mind, again my opinion your may vary.

Point/counterpoint time...   Tongue

Friday the 13th...
I agree with the first part to a degree.  Jason, as a child, obviously had some sort of physical and/or mental disability, this would account for the way he moves.
Good with a bow, again, see my first counterpoint.
The third I definitely agree with.  I think even if he was disabled, he would still be vengeful to an entirely different degree.

Halloween...
In my opinion, him just being plain "evil" is what made the original series great.  Now he's an abused redneck?  That's half the people I work with!!
Second one I do agree with more.  And why would a hardware store have Halloween masks anyhow?
Third, I liked the original mask better, it made him more like a ghost.  And let's face it, a mask buried in the dirt for over 10 year would be completely disintegrated.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre...
I actually agree with all of these.  While the original is a classic, there really was no story behind it.  The never versions definitely gave you more character background, and more of a reason to hate the family even more.

This is why I love this forum! Slappy I agree with you most of the time..
but not on you friday point

I love the way the writers included Jason being able to use the bow, throw the ax, set traps, they are all things learned at camp. This makes the character So much more versatile. I also don't think just because he had a diability he couldn't do all these things very well!
Heck I went to high school with a guy who had a mental disability, he was crazy stong in the weight room!
He could have broken the guys that picked on him in half,....he just didn't know he could. I always thought what if he said enough is enough one day. Man it would have looked like a Jason kill scene in that piece!
I guess that is why I like this new verson of this character so much. I like the way Kane Hodder played him too,but it seems a little one diminutional to me.
As far as Myers I see your point.
