The only time I went I was 13 so crowds and expense didn't matter to me at the time. I think one of the only draws for me now, other than the arts/crafts exhibition would be if there was someone performing that I might want to see.

Does anyone go to the State Fair? I've only been once.
Being located outside of Raleigh, We have been alot,.....but it's WAY TOO CROWDED. You're not missing anything by going to the smaller fairs. If you do go to the State Fair ... go on a weekday as soon as they open , & leave before 5:00. Otherwise you'll be in traffic all night! Not worth it... in my opinion anyway.

Ah, that's another thing I remember about the state fair. I was literally stuck in traffic for 2 hours at a dead stop trying to get off onto Hillsborough Street. I've never seen traffic that bad, and I've driven in cities like Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City.

Cabarrus county fair is always fun. I love going to the local festivals as well, like mint hill madness, and matthews alive, festival in the park is also good.

I don't know, you guys. I guess I was spoiled as a child because we went to Six Flags and the Boardwalk all the time. I will either pay for entry OR I will pay for rides and attractions. I refuse to pay for both, so I don't do fairs at all.
I do, however enjoy the smaller street festivals (Autumn Leaves in Mt. Airy, for example) and multi-cultural fairs (like Fiesta in downtown Winston and PowWows).

The Autumn Leaves festival in Mt. Airy is great. I go to the Dixie Classic Fair mainly for fair food. I rarely ride any rides, but I will play a few games and eat like a pig. Plus, I have a young niece and nephew now, and they go crazy there, so that's always fun. DCF is like the "official" start of fall to me. The chocolate and caramel covered apples, fair food, the smells, the games...it's right next to the smell and sights at a haunt for my favorite things (along with the silence of a late night winter storm).

I grew up in Raleigh and didn't miss a State Fair for nearly 30 years (missed it in 2007). I don't do the rides but I LOVE the crafts, history, animals, exhibits, food and everything else that showcases the state. I go on off-days and night and avoid the crowds. I also know all the sneak ways in so I haven't waited long in traffic since I've been driving...

I've been to Brushy Mountain once, and I haven't been back. Way too crowded, and it was unbearably hot the day I went.
Fair food is just another of my favorite parts of Fall. A cool night at the fair, have some cotton candy, and a funnel cake. Maybe a cheese steak, or kettle corn. Gotta get a caramel and chocolate covered apple. I love the arts and crafts, and I do have to admit that I usually play a few games. I might go during the day when they have the days where you can ride everything for one price, but not usually. I prefer the night when all the lights are on, and it's cooler. It just has a completely different feel to it at night.

Fall is without a doubt the best time of year. The past couple of mornings have been chilly. I love it!

Why spend money on going to a fair, when it could be better spent on more haunted houses?? Just a thought..

I won't state how much money I spend to go to all of these haunted houses, but the Dixie Classic Fair is a must for me. Autumn just isn't the same without it. I grew up in a small town, and it and all the similar surrounding towns all had fairs throughout the year. There was always at least 1 during Fall, and it was as must a part of the season as haunted houses were, and still are. That's just my $.02.
