Title: Haunted Pyramids - Lawndale NC
Post by: Badger on October 07, 2013, 12:54:36 PM
The Haunted Pyramids
Attended 10/5/13

Scare Factor: 4/5 - Trying to get to the Haunted Pyramids is always a bit...unsettling as you really travel far out into the middle of nowhere.  As you travel down a long rural highway you suddenly see a sign and immediately turn onto a gravel path (which is new it seems). If you're fortunate to park near the buildings, you'll see flames raging in front of one haunt, fog and laser lights, across another, and the occasional 'WHOOMPH' and glow from behind the building.  What is it?  Who knows, but it's really unnerving.

Actors: 4/5 - No real complaints here with one strange exception.  As we were walking through one room, one of the actors yells out "White Power".  "White Power"?  Really?  As we wondered whether or not he really said that, he took off his mask and began laughing.  Interestingly enough, the actor was black.  My companion asked him if he really said that, and he admitted it.  That left us shaking our heads.  I have noticed a marked improvement in the scare factor of the other actors though.  I am glad that they don't hang out in front of the respective haunts with their masks off smoking as in years past.  I did have one actor break character and talk to me while I was waiting to get in Clown Town, but it turns out he knew me.

Sets/Props/FX: 4.5/5 - The owner works as a pyrotechnic expert on movie and TV sets so there is a lot of fire involved at the Haunted Pyramids.  The 'WHOOMPH' mentioned earlier is an example of what he does.  he also collects a lot of movie memorabilia and some of them are used in the haunts.  Others rest in his collection at the end of one of the mazes.  There were no major changes except at the beginning of Monster Manor which was a nice way to begin the evening.

Length: 4/5 - It's at least an hour to go through all four mazes, unless it's REALLY slow and I doubt that will happen now that the season is kicking into high gear.  The two longest mazes will take 15-20 minutes each and the shorter two take about 10 each.

Value: 4.75/5 - A decent price for everything.  No complaints.

Overall: 4.25/5 - It's a spooky trip out there, the ambiance is creepy, and the haunts are scary.  Parking is plentiful and the food is cheap and good (standard hot dogs/pizza/nachos/ etc).  The brothers who run the event say there is plenty of room to expand and there is rumblings of them possibly expanding some year.  I certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a night visiting just one haunt.  Because of its remote location, it is  recommended that you stay here and just ENJOY the experience.  I could (and have) just sat down and observed the customers walking around in fear.  It's a lot of fun and fast becoming one of my favorite haunts in NC and I might have to go back later in the season.
